THE FOUNDING

Our Story

The Grottoes were founded in 1889 as the “playground of Masonry” — a club open to Master Masons and built around good humor, friendship, and charity. Where the lodge is the place for serious work, the Grotto is where brothers relax and have fun.

Bendemeer Grotto received its charter in 1924. Ever since, our members have been getting together season after season — to celebrate, to serve the community, and to welcome new friends into the club. The story of those decades lives on in what we still do today: the events we host, the causes we support, and the friendships we keep building.

THROUGH THE YEARS

Our Journey

  1. 1889

    The Grottoes Begin

The Grottoes of North America are founded as the "playground of Masonry" — a place where Master Masons could set aside the formality of the lodge, relax, and enjoy each other's company. From the very start, the idea was simple: friendship, laughter, and doing good together.

  2. 1924

    Bendemeer Grotto Is Chartered

Bendemeer Grotto receives its official charter, and a new chapter opens for Master Masons in our area. The first members come together, and the traditions of good food, good company, and giving back begin here.

  3. Through the Decades

    Traditions Take Root

Year after year, the Grotto keeps its calendar full — regular meetings, the annual Monarch Ball, officer installations, and plenty of dinners and socials in between. Many of these traditions continue today, largely unchanged, because they simply work: they bring people together.

  4. In Living Memory

    Service to the Community

Beyond the fun, members have always carried the Grotto's purpose into the wider community — supporting families in need, contributing to local causes, and showing up when help is needed. Giving back has never been an afterthought here; it's a big part of why we exist.

  5. Today

    Growing the Next Generation

The Grotto is open to every Master Mason who wants to join. Longtime members welcome new ones, show them the ropes, and make sure the friendships and traditions that got us this far keep going strong for years to come.
